The Miami Heat reportedly have a suspension and a bit of a mystery on their hands.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Miami suspended Dion Waiters for 10 games because of “conduct detrimental to the team.” The suspension comes after Brian Windhorst and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported Waiters missed Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers and received medical treatment after he “experienced a ‘panic attack’ on the team’s charter flight Thursday night after consuming a THC-infused edible.”

Charania noted a teammate allegedly gave Waiters the “gummy,” but the guard has not said who it was because he’s been “reluctant” to give up information.

Marc Stein of the New York Times passed along Miami’s statement that called the incident on the plane a “very scary situation on Thursday night” and pointed to the “number of instances this season in which Dion has engaged in conduct detrimental to the team”:

Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press provided some clarity and pointed out “This needs to be made very clear: Dion Waiters wasn’t suspended SOLELY for the edible. It’s an accumulation of incidents that go far beyond—though include—Thursday night and his anger/lashing out over playing time in the preseason.”

Friday’s 95-80 loss to the Lakers will be included in the 10-game suspension, although Bobby Marks of ESPN noted the Syracuse product is no longer eligible for a $1.2 million bonus in his contract that would have triggered if Waiters played 70 or more games this season.

Windhorst and Wojnarowski noted the Heat also suspended Waiters for the season opener because of “conduct detrimental to the team” after he complained about his role.

He has yet to play in a game this season and was only on the active list twice for the 6-3 Heat.
