It’s a brisk and windy night in South Bend, and the defenses are dominating the day as USC leads Notre Dame 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams are sitting back on defense and limiting the other from hitting on explosive plays, and it’s resulted in five punts and just three points through one quarter of action.
Kedon Slovis started the game completing 6-of-9 passes for 50 yards in his first action back since getting knocked out of the Utah game with a concussion. Notre Dame’s defense was doing a good job of swarming to the ball, but Amon-Ra St. Brown and USC’s running backs were getting a lot of looks on short passes. Notre Dame fell behind because it couldn’t convert on third downs, though Ian Book and the ground game was just getting warmed up at the end of the quarter.
